“LET’S GET STARTED”

They said, “We’re with you. Let’s get started.” They rolled up their sleeves, ready for the good work.                                                                  Nehemiah  2:18

       BUILDING AND BATTLING

Today we begin building.  But I want to stretch us to be multi-tasking.  We are building the kingdom of God and we are building buildings for the Kingdom of God.

Nehemiah lived in a time when Jerusalem was in disrepair.  It was much like when you see pictures of the destruction of WWII.   Buildings and houses were in shambles.  There was rubble everywhere.  The walls or defenses were broken down.  Anyone could come in and attach, steal, kill or rob.

But there were those, Tobiah and Sanballat, by name who didn’t want Jerusalem to be rebuilt.   They threatened Nehemiah and the people with violent attacks.  So Nehemiah had the people multi-task.   They were to be ready for battle and building all at the same time.

Then the people of Judah began to complain, “The workers are getting tired, and there is so much rubble to be moved. We will never be able to build the wall by ourselves.”

11Meanwhile, our enemies were saying, “Before they know what’s happening, we will swoop down on them and kill them and end their work.”

12The Jews who lived near the enemy came and told us again and again, “They will come from all directions and attack us!” 13So I placed armed guards behind the lowest parts of the wall in the exposed areas. I stationed the people to stand guard by families, armed with swords, spears, and bows.

14Then as I looked over the situation, I called together the nobles and the rest of the people and said to them, “Don’t be afraid of the enemy! Remember the Lord, who is great and glorious, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes!”

15When our enemies heard that we knew of their plans and that God had frustrated them, we all returned to our work on the wall. 16But from then on, only half my men worked while the other half stood guard with spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail. The leaders stationed themselves behind the people of Judah   17who were building the wall. The laborers carried on their work with one hand supporting their load and one hand holding a weapon.

18All the builders had a sword belted to their side.                   Nehemiah 4:10-18

BATTLING  IS SPIRITUAL WARFARE IN PRAYER.

       THE SWORD

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it   John 1:5

This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all.                                                      1 John 1:5

For our God is a devouring (consuming) fire.                               Hebrews 12:29

He shot his arrows and scattered his enemies;  his lightning flashed, and they were greatly confused.                                                                         Psalm 18:14

And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white.  (flashing like lightning)                        Luke 9:29

Then the angel filled the incense burner with fire from the altar and threw it down upon the earth; and thunder crashed, lightning flashed, and there was a terrible earthquake.                                                                              Revelation 8:5

He fills his hands with lightning bolts and hurls each at its target.          Job 36:32

Give them this message from the Sovereign LORD:  “A sword, a sword is drawn for your slaughter.  It is polished to destroy,  flashing like lightning
